Pest-free travel to Waiheke Island
Part of our vision for a thriving, connected Waiheke Island is a mission to minimise the impacts of pests in this special place. Island Direct is a proud partner of the Department of Conservation (DOC) and Auckland Council’s Pest Free Hauraki Gulf campaign, which aims to provide a safe haven for some of the most endangered animals and plants which call the Hauraki Gulf home.
Help us keep the Hauraki Gulf pest free by making sure to always check your gear before leaving the mainland.
- Check – your gear for pests such as rodents and insects
- Clean – footwear and gear, removing soil and seeds
- Close – ensure your gear is zipped up (no open bags)
If travelling with a bike, please ensure it is clean before bringing it on board. There is a bike cleaning facility in the main area of the Downtown Ferry Terminal to use if required. And while we love pets, please note that no birds or skinks are to be taken to Waiheke Island. Soil and plants should also not be taken on board.
